Product Description

This is a deep wine Ajrakh-style print saree in semi gaji silk, worked over with real mirrors. The print carries elephant boota in red and ivory across the body, opening at the pallu into rows of peacock motifs, a marching line of elephants, and dense floral medallions, with mirrors set into the pattern throughout.

What you are buying

  • Fabric: semi gaji silk — a silk blend with a smooth, fluid surface
  • Colour: deep wine with a red and ivory print
  • Work: real mirror work set into the print, across the body and pallu
  • Print motifs: elephant boota, peacock and floral medallions
  • Length: 6.5 metres
  • Finish: tasselled pallu end

About the print

This saree draws on Ajrakh's block-print tradition from Kutch in Gujarat, but it is not the classical, strictly geometric Ajrakh — the elephant and peacock figures here are a contemporary addition to that visual language.

Wine is the quietest of the three colourways in this print. The red motifs sit tonally against the wine ground rather than jumping forward the way they do on the pure red version, so this reads as the more grown-up, evening-appropriate option of the three. The mirrors are real, not printed circles or foil, and they are placed into the pattern rather than scattered at random — against wine they catch as soft, warm points of light rather than the sharper contrast you get on rani pink.

Which occasions this saree suits

  • Weddings, as a guest, and sangeet: wine is one of our four permanent staple colours and one of the most dependable guest shades we carry, and mirror work sits at the celebratory end of a wedding rather than the ceremonial one
  • Karva Chauth and puja: traditional in colour and formal enough for the evening
  • Diwali and festive evenings: the tonal red-on-wine print and the mirror work both read well under indoor light
  • Navratri and garba: gaji silk is fluid and light enough to dance in, if you prefer a deeper colour to the brighter Navratri shades
  • Gifting: wine is a safer, more universal choice than a bright colour when you are not certain of someone's taste

This is a livelier, more folk-rooted saree than our Banarasi silks, but the wine colourway is the closest of the three to something you could wear to a more formal function. For a strictly formal reception, our katan and tissue sarees still carry more weight.

How to style a wine Ajrakh elephant print saree

Blouse

Black, as photographed, is the cleanest choice and lets the print and mirrors carry the look. Deep maroon or the wine itself, a shade darker, keeps it tonal and quietly elegant. Antique gold picks up the mirror work's warmth. Bottle green is the boldest contrast worth trying.

Keep the blouse plain. A print this detailed with mirror work already carries pattern and sparkle, and a busy blouse competes with both.

Jewellery

Oxidised silver first. Mirror work and block print belong to the same folk design tradition, and oxidised silver reads as deliberate against them in a way polished gold does not. Chunky silver jhumkas, a broad silver choker, a hasli, or beaded and terracotta pieces all work.

Antique gold or temple gold is the traditional alternative, and it suits wine particularly well if the occasion calls for something warmer. Skip polished yellow gold and anything heavily stoned; the mirrors are already carrying the sparkle. One statement piece is enough.

Footwear and finish

Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels rather than stilettos. A potli bag, mirror-worked or embroidered if you have one. Hair in a loose bun or a braid.

Colour note

Deep wine is one of the most universally flattering colours in the range. It holds definition on fair complexions, reads rich on wheatish and deep skin tones, and works across a wider range of ages than a bright pink or red would.

Size and drape

The saree is 6.5 metres long. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Gaji silk is fluid rather than stiff, so it pleats easily and falls softly.

How to care for this saree

  • Hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
  • Do not machine wash or wring
  • Lay flat to dry in shade, never in direct sunlight
  • Handle the mirrors gently — do not scrub or iron directly over them
  • Store folded in a muslin or cotton cloth, not a plastic bag
