Product Description
This is a teal Ajrakh-style print saree in semi gaji silk, worked over with real mirrors. The print carries elephant boota in red and ivory across the body, opening at the pallu into rows of peacock motifs, a marching line of elephants, and dense floral medallions, with mirrors set into the pattern throughout.
What you are buying
- Fabric: semi gaji silk — a silk blend with a smooth, fluid surface
- Colour: teal with a red and ivory print
- Work: real mirror work set into the print, across the body and pallu
- Print motifs: elephant boota, peacock and floral medallions
- Length: 6.5 metres
- Finish: tasselled pallu end
About the print
This saree draws on Ajrakh's block-print tradition from Kutch in Gujarat, but it is not the classical, strictly geometric Ajrakh — the elephant and peacock figures here are a contemporary addition to that visual language.
Teal is the coolest of the four colourways in this print, and it is the one where the red motifs genuinely contrast rather than sit tonally or blend — teal and red are opposite in temperature, so the print reads sharper and more graphic here than on red, rani pink or wine. The mirrors are real, not printed circles or foil, and they are placed into the pattern rather than scattered at random.
Which occasions this saree suits
- Weddings, as a guest, and sangeet: teal is a distinctive, less-expected guest colour, and mirror work sits at the celebratory end of a wedding rather than the ceremonial one
- Navratri and garba: teal appears on several published Navratri colour lists, and gaji silk is fluid and light enough to dance in
- Festive gatherings and evening parties: a cooler alternative to the red-toned colourways in this print, useful if you already own several warm sarees
- Gifting: teal is distinctive enough to feel considered, without being as bold a colour choice as rani pink
How to style a teal Ajrakh elephant print saree
Blouse
Black, as photographed, is the cleanest choice and lets the print and mirrors carry the look. A deeper teal or navy keeps it tonal. Mustard and antique gold are the strongest warm contrasts and work particularly well against teal. Ivory lightens it for daytime.
Keep the blouse plain. A print this detailed with mirror work already carries pattern and sparkle, and a busy blouse competes with both.
Jewellery
Oxidised silver first. Mirror work and block print belong to the same folk design tradition, and oxidised silver reads as deliberate against them in a way polished gold does not. Silver also sits naturally with a cool colour like teal, so this is one of the sarees in the print where silver is the clear first choice rather than an alternative. Chunky silver jhumkas, a broad silver choker, a hasli, or beaded and terracotta pieces all work.
Antique gold is the warmer option if you want to lift the coolness of the teal. Skip polished yellow gold and anything heavily stoned; the mirrors are already carrying the sparkle. One statement piece is enough.
Footwear and finish
Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels rather than stilettos. A potli bag, mirror-worked or embroidered if you have one. Hair in a loose bun or a braid.
Colour note
Teal is a cool tone and it holds definition across the full range of complexions — deep enough for contrast on fair skin, saturated enough to hold its own on deeper skin tones. It is also one of the less common colours in Indian festive wear, which is part of its appeal.
Size and drape
The saree is 5.5 metres long. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.
Gaji silk is fluid rather than stiff, so it pleats easily and falls softly.
