Product Description

This is a royal blue soft katan silk saree with silver zari floral buttas scattered across the body, a zari temple border running along both edges, and a broad woven zari brocade panel on the pallu. The silver buttas against a deep royal blue are what set it apart from the rest of our katan range — most of it is gold on warm colours, and this one runs cool.

What you are buying

  • Fabric: soft katan silk — a denser semi-silk weave, not pure katan and not pure mulberry silk
  • Colour: royal blue
  • Work: silver zari floral buttas across the body, zari temple border, woven zari brocade pallu
  • Length: 6.3  metres

About the fabric

Katan is a tighter, denser weave than our soft silk, which gives it more body and a crisper fall.
The silk is sourced from Varanasi, where the founder selects fabric directly from weaver families each season. The zari is woven into the fabric on the loom rather than printed, glued or applied afterwards. On the pallu panel and the temple border that difference is easiest to see — woven zari has depth to it and catches light unevenly, where a printed or applied finish sits flat.

Which occasions this saree suits

  • Weddings, as a guest: royal blue is one of the safest and most appropriate guest colours at any function, at any time of day
  • Reception, sangeet and engagement: the brocade pallu carries enough weight for an evening event
  • Diwali and festive evenings: zari on a deep blue reads richly under indoor and artificial light
  • Navratri: royal blue is one of the nine Navratri colours — check the published colour list for the current year if you are following the day-by-day sequence
  • Puja and family functions: traditional in structure without being loud
  • Gifting: royal blue is the colour we recommend most often when someone is unsure of the recipient's taste — it suits a wide range of ages and complexions

This is a festive and occasion saree. For office or daily wear, our Maheshwari cotton and printed crepe sarees are the better choice.

How to style a royal blue katan silk saree

Blouse

Ivory or off-white, as photographed, keeps it clean and lets the silver buttas do the work. Gold or antique gold brocade takes it more traditional. Silver or grey picks up the buttas directly. Deep wine and rani pink are the strongest true contrasts. Avoid an exact royal blue match — it flattens the saree in photographs.

Jewellery

This is the one saree in the range where silver genuinely competes with gold. Silver, white gold or oxidised silver harmonise with the silver zari buttas and with the coolness of the blue. Antique gold or kundan also work, particularly if your blouse is gold. What does not work is mixing gold and silver in the same look — pick one and stay with it.

Footwear and finish

Two to three inch heels or wedges. A potli or clutch. Hair tied or in a bun so the pallu stays visible across the shoulder.

Colour note

Royal blue is a cool tone, and silver zari sits with it naturally. It reads well across the full range of complexions — deep enough for contrast on fair skin, saturated enough to hold its own on deeper skin tones.

Size, length and drape

The saree is 6.3 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Katan is denser than our soft silk, so it holds a pleat crisply and keeps its shape through the evening. It does need a little more pinning at the shoulder than a lighter fabric — around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder and pinned.

How to care for this saree

  • Dry clean is strongly recommended for katan for 1st few wash — the density of the weave and the zari on the pallu make it the safer route throughout the saree's life
  • Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth with a silica gel sachet, not in a plastic bag
  • Refold along different lines every few months so permanent crease marks do not set in

Care Instructions

Dry clean recommended. Store in a muslin cloth. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
