Product Description

This is a dual-tone soft katan silk saree that shifts between red and rani pink as it moves — the warp and weft are woven in two colours, so the shade changes with the light and the angle. Small gold zari buttas run across the body, a gold zari temple border frames both edges, and the pallu carries a broad woven zari brocade panel.

What you are buying

  • Fabric: soft katan silk
  • Colour: dual tone, reading red in some light and rani pink in others
  • Work: gold zari buttas across the body, gold zari temple border, woven zari brocade pallu
  • Length: 6.3 metres (including blouse piece)

About the fabric

Katan is a tighter, denser weave than our soft silk, which is what gives it more body and a crisper fall.

The silk is sourced from Varanasi, where the founder selects fabric directly from weaver families each season. The zari is woven into the fabric on the loom rather than printed, glued or applied afterwards. On the pallu that difference is easiest to see — the brocade panel has depth and texture to it, and it catches light unevenly the way woven metal thread does.

What is a dual tone saree?

The threads running lengthwise and the threads running crosswise are dyed in two different colours. Woven together, the fabric reads as one shade from one angle and another shade from the next. On this saree it moves between a warm red and a rani pink.

It means the colour will not look identical in every photograph, including ours — that is the fabric doing what it is meant to do, not a colour mismatch.

Which occasions this saree suits

  • Weddings, as a guest: rani pink is one of the most reliable guest colours, and the zari pallu gives it enough weight for a main function
  • Reception, sangeet and engagement: the brocade pallu photographs well under indoor and artificial light
  • Diwali and festive evenings: katan holds its shape through a long evening better than a lighter silk
  • Karva Chauth and puja: traditional in both colour and structure
  • Gifting: a katan with a woven pallu reads as a considered gift rather than a routine one

This is a festive and occasion saree. For office or daily wear, our Maheshwari cotton and printed crepe sarees are the better choice — a zari temple border and a brocade pallu will read as overdressed at a desk.

How to style a red and rani pink katan silk saree

Blouse

Gold or antique gold brocade, as photographed, is the classic pairing and picks up the zari. Teal and bottle green are the strongest contrasts against rani pink and are the pairing we come back to most often. Deep wine works if you want it tonal. Avoid orange — two warm tones this close together read muddy — and avoid an exact colour match, which looks flat in photographs.

Jewellery

Kundan, temple gold or antique gold sit naturally with woven zari. Pearl softens it, as in these photographs. Choose one statement piece — either the earrings or the necklace, not both competing — because the brocade pallu is already the loudest element.

Footwear and finish

Two to three inch heels or wedges. A potli or clutch. Hair tied or in a bun so the pallu stays visible across the shoulder.

Colour note

A red-to-rani-pink shift is one of the most wearable combinations in the range — warm enough to glow on wheatish and deep skin tones, bright enough to hold definition on fair complexions.

Size, length and drape

The saree is 5.5 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Katan is denser than our soft silk, so it holds a pleat crisply and keeps its shape through the evening. It does need a little more pinning at the shoulder than a lighter fabric — around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder and pinned.

How to care for this saree

  • Dry clean is strongly recommended for katan only for the first few wear
  • Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth with a silica gel sachet, not in a plastic bag
  • Refold along different lines every few months so permanent crease marks do not set in

Care Instructions

Dry clean recommended. Store in a muslin cloth. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
