Red Maheshwari Cotton Saree

This is a deep red Maheshwari saree with small gold zari buttas woven across the body and a gold zari border running through to the pallu. Tonal rather than contrast — the red carries all the way through, and the gold is the only other colour on it. Blouse

Gold or antique gold picks up the zari and is the most natural pairing. Black gives it a sharper, more modern line. Bottle green is the strongest true contrast. If you prefer tonal, go one shade deeper into maroon rather than matching the red exactly — an exact match looks flat in photographs. Avoid orange and rani pink: two warm tones this close together read muddy.

Jewellery

Antique gold, temple gold or kundan sit naturally with the zari and with red. Pearl works if you want to soften it. Keep to one clear piece — a tonal saree with a woven border does not need competition.

Footwear and finish

Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels. A simple bun or a braid, and a bindi if the occasion calls for it.

Size, length and drape

The saree is 6.3 metres long. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Maheshwari holds a pleat well without being stiff, which makes it one of the easier fabrics to drape in the Nivi style — around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder.

How to care for this saree

This saree has silk in it, so it is not a wash-and-forget cotton.

• Hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
• Do not machine wash
• Do not wring or twist
• Lay flat to dry in shade, never in direct sunlight — sunlight fades colour on a saree like this more than washing does
• Wash separately the first few times as a precaution, particularly with a deep red
• Iron on low heat with a thin cotton cloth in between — never place the iron directly on the zari
  
• Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth, not in a plastic bag
