About the print

Ajrakh is one of the oldest surviving print traditions in India, associated with Kutch in Gujarat and with Sindh across the border. Its signature is geometry — eight-pointed stars, trefoils and concentric medallions, built up in layers.

On a red ground the black and white in the print sit in sharp contrast, which makes this the most graphic of our three Ajrakh colourways — red, black and navy read as three distinct personalities of the same design.

The mirrors are real, not printed circles or foil, and they are placed into the pattern rather than scattered at random. Against red they catch as bright points against a warm ground — this reads rich in flat light and lights up the moment you move.

How to style a red Ajrakh mirror work saree

Blouse

Black, as photographed, is the cleanest choice and the one we would pick first — it grounds the red and lets the mirrors do the work. Deep maroon keeps it tonal and rich. Ivory or off-white lightens it for daytime.

Avoid orange and rani pink close to this red — two warm tones this near each other read muddy rather than contrasting. Keep the blouse plain: an Ajrakh print with mirror work already carries pattern and sparkle, and a busy blouse competes with both.

Jewellery

Oxidised silver first. Mirror work, Ajrakh and oxidised silver come from the same design tradition, and together they read as deliberate rather than mismatched. Chunky silver jhumkas, a broad silver choker, a hasli, or beaded and terracotta pieces all work.

The saree is 6.5 metres long. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Gaji silk is fluid rather than stiff, so it pleats easily and falls softly. The extra length leaves room for a fuller set of pleats or a longer pallu if you prefer to drape it that way.
