This is a red Ajrakh-style print saree in semi gaji silk, worked over with real mirrors. The print carries elephant boota in black and white across the body, opening at the pallu into rows of peacock motifs, a marching line of elephants, and dense floral medallions, with mirrors set into the pattern throughout.

About the print

This saree draws on Ajrakh's block-print tradition from Kutch in Gujarat, but it is not the classical, strictly geometric Ajrakh — the elephant and peacock figures here are a contemporary addition to that visual language, printed in the same red, black and ivory palette Ajrakh is known for.

The mirrors are real, not printed circles or foil, and they are placed into the pattern rather than scattered at random. On a saturated red ground they catch as bright points of light — this saree reads rich in flat light and comes alive the moment you move.

One note for wedding guests. Red is traditionally avoided by guests at Indian weddings, since it sits close to bridal colours. This is a livelier, more folk-rooted saree than our Banarasi silks. For a formal reception, our katan and tissue sarees carry more weight.

How to style a red Ajrakh elephant print saree

Blouse

Black, as photographed, is the cleanest choice — it lets the print and the mirrors carry the whole look. Deep maroon keeps it tonal and rich. Ivory or off-white lightens it for a daytime function.

Avoid orange and rani pink close to this red — two warm tones this near each other read muddy rather than contrasting. Keep the blouse plain: a print this detailed with mirror work already carries pattern and sparkle, and a busy blouse competes with both.

Jewellery

Oxidised silver first. Mirror work and block print belong to the same folk design tradition, and oxidised silver reads as deliberate against them in a way polished gold does not. Chunky silver jhumkas, a broad silver choker, a hasli, or beaded and terracotta pieces all work.

Antique gold or temple gold is the traditional alternative if the occasion calls for it — red with gold is the classic festive pairing. Skip polished yellow gold and anything heavily stoned; the mirrors are already carrying the sparkle. One statement piece is enough.

Footwear and finish

Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels rather than stilettos. A potli bag, mirror-worked or embroidered if you have one. Hair in a loose bun or a braid.

Colour note

Red is one of the most universally wearable colours in the range. It amplifies warmth on wheatish and deep complexions, and the black-and-ivory print gives it enough contrast to hold definition on fairer skin too.

Size and drape

The saree is 5.5 metres long. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Gaji silk is fluid rather than stiff, so it pleats easily and falls softly.

How to care for this saree

• Hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
• Do not machine wash or wring
• Lay flat to dry in shade, never in direct sunlight
• Handle the mirrors gently — do not scrub or iron directly over them
• Store folded in a muslin or cotton cloth, not a plastic bag
