Rani Pink Soft Katan Silk Saree with Gold Temple Border

This is a rani pink soft katan silk saree with a contrasting purple border, small gold zari buttas across the body, and a gold zari temple border running the length of both edges. The pallu carries a broad woven brocade panel — the heaviest piece of weaving on the saree.

About the fabric

Katan is a tighter, denser weave than our soft silk, which is what gives it more body and a crisper fall. Ours is a semi-katan — a semi-silk blend, not pure katan and not pure mulberry silk. We do not sell it as either.

The silk is sourced from Golghar market in Varanasi, where the founder selects fabric directly from weaver families each season. The zari is woven into the fabric on the loom rather than printed, glued or applied afterwards. The temple border is the easiest place to see it — the triangles have raised texture and catch light unevenly, where a printed edge would sit flat.

A note on the photographs

The last image is the saree folded, shot plainly, with no styling. That is the most accurate picture of the colour: a bright rani pink body against a deeper purple border.

How to style a rani pink and purple katan silk saree

Blouse

Purple, picking up the border, is the safest choice — the two colours are already proven together on the saree itself. Antique gold brocade works with the zari. Deep teal and bottle green are the strongest true contrasts against rani pink and the pairing we come back to most often. Avoid orange and red: two warm tones this close together read muddy.

Jewellery

Oxidised silver, as photographed, gives it a bolder and more contemporary reading — it holds its own against a saturated pink in a way that gold does not always manage. Antique gold and kundan are the traditional route if you want to pick up the zari instead. Choose one metal and stay with it.

Footwear and finish

Two to three inch heels or wedges. A potli or clutch. Hair tied or in a bun so the pallu stays visible across the shoulder.

Rani pink is a high-saturation colour that reads richly across warm, wheatish and deep complexions, and the purple border gives it depth rather than letting it go flat.

Size, length and drape

The saree is 6.5 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Katan is denser than our soft silk, so it holds a pleat crisply and keeps its shape through the evening. The pallu is weighty — pin it securely at the shoulder. Around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder.

How to care for this saree

• Dry clean is strongly recommended for katan — the density of the weave and the zari on the pallu make it the safer route throughout the saree's life, not only for the first wear
• Never machine wash
• Do not wring, and never hang wet silk — it stretches and warps
• Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth with a silica gel sachet, not in a plastic bag
• Refold along different lines every few months so permanent crease marks do not set in
