Product Description
This is a deep purple Maheshwari saree with a contrasting black pallu and small gold zari buttas woven across the body. It is a cotton-silk blend, which is how Maheshwari sarees are traditionally made — light enough to wear through a full working day, with enough sheen to carry a puja or a mehendi.
What you are buying
- Fabric: Maheshwari silk cotton — a cotton-silk blend, not pure cotton and not pure silk
- Colour: deep purple body with a solid black pallu
- Work: gold zari buttas across body and pallu, with a gold zari border
- Length: 5.5 metres (body + border + pallu)
- Finish: tasselled pallu end
What is Maheshwari silk cotton?
Maheshwari is a weave from Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the Narmada. The weave is associated with Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, who set up the first weaving workshops there in the eighteenth century.
Maheshwari fabric is a blend of cotton and silk. This is not a shortcut or a substitute for a pure fabric — it is what the weave has always been. The cotton is what makes it breathable and light on the shoulder; the silk is what gives the surface its quiet sheen and helps the drape fall cleanly instead of going limp. A Maheshwari saree in pure cotton would not behave like a Maheshwari saree.
We say this plainly because a lot of sarees at this price are sold as "pure cotton" when they are not. Ours is a blend, we tell you it is a blend, and the blend is the reason it drapes the way it does.
Which occasions this saree suits
- Office and work wear: the weight is comfortable for a full day at a desk, and the zari work is small enough not to read as overdressed
- Puja and temple visits: breathable for long periods of sitting
- Mehendi and daytime functions: practical for outdoor and seated events, especially in warm weather
- Family gatherings and daytime celebrations: the black pallu and gold zari lift it above an everyday saree
- Navratri daytime wear: purple appears in the Navratri palette — check the published colour list for the current year if you are following the day-by-day sequence
This is a daytime and semi-formal saree rather than a heavy evening one. For a wedding reception or a Diwali evening, our tissue silk and soft silk sarees carry more shine.
How to style a purple Maheshwari saree
Blouse
Black, as photographed, is the simplest choice and picks up the pallu. For contrast, a deep teal, bottle green or olive blouse works well against purple. A mustard or antique gold blouse pulls out the zari. Avoid an exact purple match — it flattens the saree in photographs.
Jewellery
The border is gold zari, so antique gold, temple gold or plain gold jhumkas sit naturally with it. Oxidised silver also works and gives the saree a more everyday, less formal reading. Keep to one clear piece — the contrast pallu is already doing the work.
Footwear and finish
Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels. A simple bun or a braid. For office, minimal studs and flats.
Colour note
Deep purple with gold reads richly across warm, wheatish and deep skin tones, and the black pallu gives it definition on fair complexions too.
Size, length and drape
The saree is 5.5 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.
Maheshwari holds a pleat well without being stiff, which makes it one of the easier fabrics to drape in the Nivi style — around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder.
How to care for this saree
This saree has silk in it, so it is not a wash-and-forget cotton.
- Hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
- Do not machine wash
- Do not wring or twist
- Lay flat to dry in shade, never in direct sunlight
- Iron on low heat with a thin cotton cloth in between — never place the iron directly on the zari
- Apply perfume to your skin and let it dry before draping; alcohol tarnishes zari permanently
- Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth, not in a plastic bag
- Refold along different lines every few months so permanent crease marks do not set in
Frequently asked questions
About the fabric
Is this Maheshwari saree pure cotton?
No. This is a Maheshwari silk cotton saree — a blend of cotton and silk. That is the traditional Maheshwari construction, not a compromise. The cotton keeps it breathable and the silk gives it sheen and drape. We do not describe it as pure cotton because it is not.
What is Maheshwari silk cotton, and why is it blended?
Maheshwari is a weave from Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, associated with Rani Ahilyabai Holkar in the eighteenth century. The fabric has always been a cotton-silk blend. The cotton makes it breathable and light on the shoulder; the silk gives it a soft sheen and helps the drape fall cleanly rather than going limp. The blend is the weave, not a substitute for one.
How is this different from your soft silk sarees?
Maheshwari silk cotton is lighter and more breathable than our soft silk, and it reads as a daytime saree. Soft silk is a semi-silk blend with more weight and more shine, which suits evening functions and weddings better. If you want something you can wear to office and to a puja, choose this. If you want something for a reception, choose soft silk or tissue silk.
Size and drape
What is the length of this saree?
The saree is 5.5 metres long, measured across the body, border and pallu.
Will this saree suit my height?
The saree is free size. The drape adjusts comfortably for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10" without any alteration. If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin the drape. Maheshwari holds pleats well, which makes it one of the easier fabrics to drape in the Nivi style.
Are the fall and pico done on this saree?
Falls and pico are complimentary on international orders only. Domestic orders are sent without fall and pico, which most customers prefer to get done locally to their own measurements.
Styling
Which blouse colour goes with a purple saree?
Black is the safest choice and matches the pallu on this saree. Deep teal, bottle green, olive, mustard and antique gold all work as contrast. Avoid matching the exact purple shade — it looks flat in photographs.
What jewellery suits a Maheshwari saree?
Antique gold or temple gold sits naturally with the gold zari border. Oxidised silver, beads or minimal gold give a more everyday look. One clear piece is enough with a contrast-pallu saree.
Occasions
Is this saree suitable for office or daily wear?
Yes. Maheshwari silk cotton is one of the most practical fabrics for work wear — light, breathable and comfortable through a full day. The zari buttas on this saree are small, so it reads as put-together rather than festive.
Can I wear this saree to a mehendi or a puja?
Yes. Maheshwari is well-suited to daytime functions — mehendi ceremonies, pujas, temple visits and family gatherings — because it stays comfortable for several hours in warm weather. For an evening reception, a tissue silk or soft silk saree carries more shine.
Is this saree comfortable in summer?
Yes. The cotton content makes Maheshwari breathable, and it is lighter than our soft silk and tissue silk sarees. It is one of the better choices for hot-weather functions and daytime outdoor events.
Is this a good saree to gift?
It suits someone who wears sarees regularly — to work, to temple, to daytime functions — rather than someone who wants an occasion piece. The purple and black with gold zari is a safe choice across ages. For a more formal gift, our tissue silk sarees carry more weight and shine.
Care
Can I machine wash this saree?
No. Because of the silk content, this saree should be hand washed in cold water with a mild liquid detergent, then laid flat to dry in shade. Machine washing and wringing will damage the weave.
Will the colour bleed in the first wash?
Wash it separately the first few times as a precaution, in cold water, without soaking. Do not use hot water, bleach or harsh detergent, and dry it flat in shade rather than in direct sunlight. Sunlight is what fades colour on a saree like this, more than washing does.
Will the gold zari tarnish?
Zari darkens over years with normal use. What speeds it up is perfume sprayed on the fabric, damp storage and plastic bags. Apply perfume to your skin first, let it dry, then drape. Store the saree folded in muslin or cotton cloth. Handled that way, the zari holds its colour for years — but no zari stays untouched forever, and we will not tell you otherwise.
Ordering, delivery and returns
Will the colour match the photographs?
We photograph every saree in natural daylight with no filters or colour editing. Screen colours can still vary a little with your device and brightness. The body of this saree is a deep purple and the pallu is solid black.
