Product Description

This is a deep purple katan silk saree with zari kalga buttas scattered across the body and a broad floral brocade border that carries through into the pallu. The pallu holds the densest weaving on the saree — a woven jaal panel framed by rows of roses, wide enough to sit as the whole visual weight of the drape.

What you are buying

  • Fabric: soft katan silk — a denser semi-silk weave, not pure katan and not pure mulberry silk
  • Colour: deep purple
  • Work: zari kalga buttas across the body, broad floral zari brocade border, woven jaal pallu

About the fabric

Katan is a tighter, denser weave than our soft silk, which is what gives it more body and a crisper fall. Ours is a semi-katan — a semi-silk blend, not pure katan and not pure mulberry silk. We do not sell it as either.

The silk is sourced from Golghar market in Varanasi, where the founder selects fabric directly from weaver families each season. The zari is woven into the fabric on the loom rather than printed, glued or applied afterwards. On a border this wide the difference is easy to see up close — woven brocade has depth and catches light unevenly, where an applied finish sits flat.

Which occasions this saree suits

  • Weddings, as a guest: purple is one of the most reliable guest colours — festive, and nowhere near the shades a guest is traditionally asked to avoid
  • Reception, sangeet and engagement: the jaal pallu photographs well under indoor and artificial light
  • Diwali and festive evenings: katan holds its shape through a long evening better than a lighter silk
  • Navratri: purple is one of the nine Navratri colours — check the published colour list for the current year if you are following the day-by-day sequence
  • Karva Chauth and puja: traditional in structure, rich without being loud
  • Gifting: purple with gold suits a wide range of ages, which makes it an easier choice than a colour you have to be sure about

This is a festive and occasion saree. For office or daily wear, our Maheshwari cotton and printed crepe sarees are the better choice — a border this broad will read as overdressed at a desk.

How to style a purple katan silk saree

Blouse

Antique gold brocade, as photographed, is the natural pairing and picks up the zari directly. Deep teal and bottle green are the strongest true contrasts against purple. Black sharpens it for an evening. Deep wine works if you want it tonal — go a shade darker rather than matching the purple, which flattens in photographs.

Jewellery

Purple is a cool-leaning colour, so both metals work here. Antique gold or kundan picks up the zari; silver and pearl sit with the coolness of the purple. Choose one and stay with it — mixing gold and silver in the same look is the thing to avoid. One statement piece, not two.

Footwear and finish

Two to three inch heels or wedges. A potli or clutch. Hair tied or in a bun so the pallu stays visible across the shoulder.

Colour note

Deep purple is one of the more universally wearable colours we carry. It holds definition on fair complexions, reads richly on wheatish and deep skin tones, and the zari brings the brightness up near the face.

Size, length and drape

The saree is 6.5 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Katan is denser than our soft silk, so it holds a pleat crisply and keeps its shape through the evening. The pallu on this one is weighty — pin it securely at the shoulder. Around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder.

How to care for this saree

  • Dry clean is strongly recommended for katan — the density of the weave and the width of the brocade border make it the safer route throughout the saree's life, not only for the first wear
  • Never machine wash
  • Do not wring, and never hang wet silk — it stretches and warps
  • Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth with a silica gel sachet, not in a plastic bag

Care Instructions

Dry clean recommended. Store in a muslin cloth. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
