Product Description
This is a parrot green Maheshwari saree with a contrasting black pallu and small gold zari buttas woven across both. A fine gold zari border runs the length of the saree and widens into a woven band where the green meets the black. It is a cotton-silk blend โ light enough for a long day outdoors, and bright enough to hold its own at a festive daytime function.
What you are buying
- Fabric: Maheshwari silk cotton โ a cotton-silk blend, not pure cotton and not pure silk
- Colour: parrot green body with a solid black pallu
- Work: gold zari buttas across body and pallu, gold zari border with a woven band at the colour change
- Finish: tasselled pallu end
What is Maheshwari silk cotton?
Maheshwari is a weave from Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the Narmada. The weave is associated with Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, who set up the first weaving workshops there in the eighteenth century.
Maheshwari fabric is a blend of cotton and silk. This is not a shortcut or a substitute for a pure fabric โ it is what the weave has always been. The cotton is what makes it breathable and light on the shoulder; the silk is what gives the surface its quiet sheen and helps the drape fall cleanly instead of going limp. A Maheshwari saree in pure cotton would not behave like a Maheshwari saree.
Which occasions this saree suits
- Navratri: green is one of the nine Navratri colours, and a breathable cotton-silk moves far better through a long evening of garba than a heavy silk does โ check the published colour list for the current year if you are following the day-by-day sequence
- Mehendi: green is a traditional mehendi colour, and this is a saree you can sit in comfortably for four or five hours of an outdoor function
- Puja and temple visits: comfortable through long periods of sitting
- Festive daytime gatherings: bright enough to read as celebration wear rather than everyday
- Summer functions: the cotton content makes it one of the better choices for hot-weather daytime events
This is a bright, festive daytime saree rather than a muted one. For office wear, our navy and olive Maheshwari sarees are the more understated choice. For a wedding reception or a Diwali evening, our tissue silk and soft silk sarees carry more shine.
How to style a parrot green Maheshwari saree
Blouse
Black, as photographed, is the cleanest choice and picks up the pallu. Magenta and rani pink are the classic pairings with a bright green and the boldest option here. Mustard and antique gold both pull out the zari. Deep maroon works if you want it richer. Avoid another shade of green โ two greens together go muddy โ and avoid an exact match, which looks flat in photographs.
Jewellery
Antique gold or temple gold sits naturally with the gold zari border. Oxidised silver gives it a more everyday, less festive reading. Green stone or kundan works if you want to stay in the same family. One clear piece is enough with a contrast-pallu saree.
Footwear and finish
Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels. A simple bun or a braid. For garba, wedges rather than heels โ you will be on your feet.
Colour note
Parrot green is a high-saturation colour and that is its strength. Bright, saturated shades read especially well on deeper skin tones, and the black pallu gives the saree the definition it needs on fair complexions. It is a colour that photographs vividly in daylight, which is worth knowing if the function will be photographed.
Size, length and drape
The saree is 6.3 metres long. It is free size โ the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.
Maheshwari holds a pleat well without being stiff, which makes it one of the easier fabrics to drape in the Nivi style โ around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder. If you are wearing it for garba, pin the pallu securely at the shoulder before you start.
How to care for this saree
This saree has silk in it, so it is not a wash-and-forget cotton.
- Hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
- Do not machine wash
- Do not wring or twist
- Lay flat to dry in shade, never in direct sunlight โ sunlight fades colour on a saree like this more than washing does, and a bright green shows fading sooner than a deep colour would
- Wash separately the first few times as a precaution
- Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth, not in a plastic bag
