Product Description

This is an red soft katan silk saree with a deep maroon border, small gold zari floral buttas across the body, and a gold zari temple border running the length of both edges. The pallu carries a broad woven brocade panel — the heaviest weaving on the saree, and the reason it reads as occasion wear rather than everyday.

What you are buying

  • Fabric: soft katan silk — a denser semi-silk weave, not pure katan and not pure mulberry silk
  • Colour: red body with a deep maroon border
  • Work: gold zari floral buttas across the body, gold zari temple border, woven brocade pallu

About the fabric

Katan is a tighter, denser weave than our soft silk, which is what gives it more body and a crisper fall. Ours is a semi-katan — a semi-silk blend, not pure katan and not pure mulberry silk. We do not sell it as either.

The silk is sourced from Golghar market in Varanasi, where the founder selects fabric directly from weaver families each season. The zari is woven into the fabric on the loom rather than printed, glued or applied afterwards. The temple border is the easiest place to see it — the triangles have raised texture and catch light unevenly, where a printed edge would sit flat.

A note on the colour

These photographs were taken in late afternoon and evening light, which pushes the red warmer and slightly more red than it is. In daylight the body reads as a clearer vermillion red, and the border as a deep maroon rather than a brown-red.

If the exact shade matters for your occasion, message us on WhatsApp before you order and we will send a photograph taken in whatever light you ask for.

Which occasions this saree suits

  • Navratri: orange is one of the nine Navratri colours, and one of the most worn — check the published colour list for the current year if you are following the day-by-day sequence
  • Weddings, as a guest: orange is festive and sits well away from the shades a guest is traditionally asked to avoid
  • Puja and temple visits: a traditional and appropriate colour for religious occasions
  • Diwali and festive daytime gatherings: the zari pallu carries an evening, and the colour photographs vividly in daylight
  • Gifting: orange with gold is a confident choice that reads as celebratory rather than cautious

How to style an red and maroon katan silk saree

Blouse

Maroon, picking up the border, is the safest choice — the two colours are already proven together on the saree itself. Bottle green and deep teal are the strongest true contrasts against red and are worth considering if you want it to look less traditional. Antique gold works with the zari.

Jewellery

Antique gold, temple gold and kundan sit naturally with a warm saree and woven zari. Oxidised silver gives it a bolder, more contemporary reading, as photographed. Choose one metal and stay with it.

Footwear and finish

Two to three inch heels or wedges. A potli or clutch. Hair tied or in a bun so the pallu stays visible across the shoulder.

Colour note

Red is a warm, high-saturation colour and it amplifies natural warmth — it reads especially richly on wheatish and deep complexions. The maroon border gives it the depth it needs to hold definition on fairer skin.

Size, length and drape

The saree is 6.5 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Katan is denser than our soft silk, so it holds a pleat crisply and keeps its shape through the evening. The pallu is weighty — pin it securely at the shoulder. Around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder.

How to care for this saree

  • Dry clean is strongly recommended for katan — the density of the weave and the zari on the pallu make it the safer route throughout the saree's life, not only for the first wear
  • Never machine wash
  • Do not wring, and never hang wet silk — it stretches and warps
  • Wash separately if you ever hand wash — a bright orange against a deep maroon is the pairing most likely to transfer
  • Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth with a silica gel sachet, not in a plastic bag

Care Instructions

Dry clean recommended. Store in a muslin cloth. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
