Product Description

This is an olive green Maheshwari saree with a royal blue pallu and small gold zari buttas woven across both. A fine gold zari border runs the length of the saree, widening into a woven band where the olive meets the blue. It is a cotton-silk blend โ€” light enough to wear through a full working day, with enough sheen to carry a puja or a daytime function.

What you are buying

  • Fabric: Maheshwari silk cotton โ€” a cotton-silk blend, not pure cotton and not pure silk
  • Colour: olive green body with a royal blue pallu
  • Work: gold zari buttas across body and pallu, gold zari border with a woven band at the colour change
  • Finish: tasselled pallu end

What is Maheshwari silk cotton?

Maheshwari is a weave from Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the Narmada. The weave is associated with Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, who set up the first weaving workshops there in the eighteenth century.

Maheshwari fabric is a blend of cotton and silk. This is not a shortcut or a substitute for a pure fabric โ€” it is what the weave has always been. The cotton is what makes it breathable and light on the shoulder; the silk is what gives the surface its quiet sheen and helps the drape fall cleanly instead of going limp. A Maheshwari saree in pure cotton would not behave like a Maheshwari saree.

Which occasions this saree suits

  • Office and work wear: olive is one of the easiest colours to wear to work โ€” muted enough to be professional, and the zari buttas are small enough not to read as overdressed
  • Mehendi and daytime functions: green is a traditional mehendi colour, and a breathable cotton-silk is far more comfortable than silk through a long seated function
  • Puja and temple visits: comfortable through long periods of sitting
  • Family gatherings and daytime celebrations: the royal blue pallu lifts it above an everyday saree
  • Navratri daytime wear: green and royal blue are both in the Navratri palette โ€” check the published colour list for the current year if you are following the day-by-day sequence

This is a daytime saree. For a wedding reception or a Diwali evening, our tissue silk and soft silk sarees carry more shine.

How to style an olive and blue Maheshwari saree

Blouse

Royal blue, as photographed, is the obvious choice and picks up the pallu โ€” it is also the safest, because the two colours are already proven together on the saree itself. Mustard and antique gold both work as warm contrast against olive. Rust and deep maroon are the bolder options. Black sharpens it for evening. Avoid an exact olive match, which looks flat in photographs.

Jewellery

Oxidised silver is the natural partner for olive โ€” it suits the muted, earthy register better than bright gold does. Antique gold works if you want to pick up the zari instead. Beads and terracotta also sit well here. One clear piece is enough with a contrast-pallu saree.

Footwear and finish

Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels. A simple bun or a braid. For office, minimal studs and flats.

Colour note

Olive is an unusual choice at this price point and that is part of its appeal โ€” it is a colour most saree ranges skip. It reads well across warm, wheatish and deep complexions, and the royal blue pallu gives it the contrast it needs on fairer skin.

Size, length and drape

The saree is 6.3 metres long. It is free size โ€” the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Maheshwari holds a pleat well without being stiff, which makes it one of the easier fabrics to drape in the Nivi style โ€” around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder.

How to care for this saree

This saree has silk in it, so it is not a wash-and-forget cotton.

  • Hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
  • Do not machine wash
  • Do not wring or twist
  • Lay flat to dry in shade, never in direct sunlight โ€” sunlight fades colour on a saree like this more than washing does
  • Wash separately the first few times as a precaution โ€” on a two-colour saree the paler half shows any transfer first
  • Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth, not in a plastic bag
