What is Maheshwari silk cotton?

Maheshwari is a weave from Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the Narmada. The weave is associated with Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, who set up the first weaving workshops there in the eighteenth century.

Maheshwari fabric is a blend of cotton and silk. This is not a shortcut or a substitute for a pure fabric — it is what the weave has always been. The cotton is what makes it breathable and light on the shoulder; the silk is what gives the surface its quiet sheen and helps the drape fall cleanly instead of going limp. A Maheshwari saree in pure cotton would not behave like a Maheshwari saree.

A tonal pairing rather than a contrast

Most of our contrast-pallu Maheshwari sarees put two different colours against each other — purple with black, olive with royal blue. This one stays inside a single colour family: a deep navy body running into a bright sky blue pallu.

How to style a navy and sky blue Maheshwari saree

Blouse

Sky blue, as photographed, picks up the pallu and is the safest choice — the two colours are already proven together on the saree itself. Navy makes it more formal and more office-appropriate. Mustard, antique gold and rust all work as warm contrast against blue. Ivory keeps it light for daytime. Avoid an exact navy match on both body and blouse, which flattens the saree in photographs.

Jewellery

Silver and oxidised silver harmonise naturally with a cool blue — this is one of the sarees in our range where silver is the better choice, not the compromise. Antique gold works if you want to pick up the zari instead. Pearl suits the sky blue. One clear piece is enough.

Footwear and finish

Size, length and drape

The saree is 6.3 metres long. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Maheshwari holds a pleat well without being stiff, which makes it one of the easier fabrics to drape in the Nivi style — around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder.

How to care for this saree

This saree has silk in it, so it is not a wash-and-forget cotton.

• Hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
• Do not machine wash
• Do not wring or twist
• Lay flat to dry in shade, never in direct sunlight — sunlight fades colour on a saree like this more than washing does
• Wash separately the first few times as a precaution — on a two-colour saree the paler half shows any transfer first, and here that is the sky blue pallu
• Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth, not in a plastic bag
