About the print

Ajrakh is one of the oldest surviving print traditions in India, associated with Kutch in Gujarat and with Sindh across the border. Its signature is the geometry — eight-pointed stars, trefoils and concentric medallions, repeated in indigo, madder red and ivory.

What sets this saree apart from a plain printed one is the mirror work. These are real mirrors, not printed circles or foil, and they are placed into the pattern rather than scattered at random. On a navy ground they do most of the work: the saree reads quiet in flat light and lively the moment you move.

How to style an Ajrakh mirror work saree

Blouse

For contrast, deep maroon or brick red picks up the Ajrakh print directly, and mustard is the bolder option that works surprisingly well against indigo. Ivory or off-white lightens it for a daytime function.

Keep the blouse plain. An Ajrakh print with mirror work already has geometry and sparkle — a printed, embroidered or heavily mirrored blouse is too much happening at once. If you want something more worked, a plain blouse with a mirror-trimmed sleeve edge is as far as we would go.

Jewellery

Oxidised silver is the natural partner here and the pairing we would recommend first. Mirror work, Ajrakh and oxidised silver come from the same design world, and they look intentional together in a way that gold does not quite manage.

Think chunky silver jhumkas, a broad silver choker or a statement silver hasli. Beads, terracotta and tribal-style pieces all work. Antique gold is the alternative if you prefer warmth, but skip polished yellow gold — it competes with the mirrors rather than complementing them.

Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels — this is not a stiletto saree. A potli bag, ideally mirror-worked or embroidered. Hair in a loose bun or a braid, with flowers if the occasion suits it.

The saree is 6.5 metres long. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Gaji silk is fluid rather than stiff, so it pleats easily and falls softly. The extra length gives you room for a fuller set of pleats or a longer pallu if you prefer to drape it that way.
