Product Description

This is a mustard Maheshwari saree with a contrasting black pallu and small gold zari buttas woven across the body. It is a cotton-silk blend, which is how Maheshwari sarees are traditionally made — light enough for a long day outdoors, with enough sheen to carry a mehendi or a haldi.

What you are buying

  • Fabric: Maheshwari silk cotton — a cotton-silk blend, not pure cotton and not pure silk
  • Colour: warm mustard body with a solid black pallu
  • Work: gold zari buttas across body and pallu, with a gold zari border
  • Length: 6.3 metres
  • Finish: tasselled pallu end

Which occasions this saree suits

  • Mehendi: yellow and mustard are the traditional mehendi colours, and a breathable cotton-silk is far more comfortable than silk through four or five hours of a seated outdoor function
  • Haldi: the colour is right for the ceremony, and this is a saree you can relax in rather than worry about — haldi functions get physical, and this is not a fabric you will be guarding all afternoon
  • Puja and temple visits: mustard is a traditional, appropriate colour, and the fabric stays comfortable through long periods of sitting
  • Office and work wear: the zari buttas are small, so it reads as put-together rather than festive
  • Navratri daytime wear: yellow is one of the Navratri colours — check the published colour list for the current year if you are following the day-by-day sequence

This is a daytime saree. For a wedding reception or a Diwali evening, our tissue silk and soft silk sarees carry more shine.

How to style a mustard Maheshwari saree

Blouse

Black, as photographed, is the cleanest choice and picks up the pallu. For contrast, bottle green, deep teal and wine all sit well against mustard. Avoid red and orange — two warm tones this close together read muddy in photographs, and an exact mustard match looks flat.

Jewellery

The border is gold zari, so antique gold, temple gold or plain gold jhumkas sit naturally with it. Oxidised silver works too and gives the saree a more everyday reading. Keep to one clear piece — the contrast pallu is already doing the work.

Footwear and finish

Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels. A simple bun or a braid. For office, minimal studs and flats.

Colour note

Mustard is a warm tone, and warm tones amplify natural warmth beautifully — it reads especially rich on wheatish and deep skin tones, and the black pallu gives it definition on fair complexions.

Size, length and drape

The saree is 5.5 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Maheshwari holds a pleat well without being stiff, which makes it one of the easier fabrics to drape in the Nivi style — around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder.

How to care for this saree

This saree has silk in it, so it is not a wash-and-forget cotton.

  • Hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
  • Do not machine wash
  • Do not wring or twist
  • Lay flat to dry in shade, never in direct sunlight — sunlight fades colour on a saree like this more than washing does
  • Wash separately the first few times as a precaution
  • Iron on low heat with a thin cotton cloth in between — never place the iron directly on the zari
  • Apply perfume to your skin and let it dry before draping; alcohol tarnishes zari permanently
  • Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth, not in a plastic bag

Care Instructions

Dry clean recommended. Store in a muslin cloth. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
