Product Description
This is an ivory tissue silk saree with white thread embroidery worked across the body — floral and paisley motifs, closely set — and a royal blue border carrying a broad silver zari brocade. The pallu is the same silver-on-blue brocade, wide and heavily woven, finished with blue tassels.
What you are buying
- Fabric: tissue silk — a semi-silk with a metallic weft, not pure silk and not pure tissue
- Colour: ivory body with a royal blue border and pallu
- Work: white thread embroidery across the body, silver zari brocade border and pallu
About the fabric
Tissue silk gets its shimmer from a metallic thread woven into the weft. It is a semi-silk blend — we do not describe it as pure silk or pure tissue, because it is neither.
The silk is sourced from Golghar market in Varanasi, where the founder selects fabric directly from weaver families each season. The zari on the border and pallu is woven on the loom rather than printed or applied afterwards.
The embroidery sits on a fabric that already has a shimmer to it, so the effect changes as you move: matte white thread against a metallic ground.
Silver rather than gold
Almost everything we carry uses gold zari. This one is silver, and it changes what the saree does.
Silver on ivory with a royal blue border reads cooler and more contemporary than the gold equivalent — closer to an evening dress than a traditional festive saree. It is also the reason silver and white gold jewellery work here, which is unusual in our range and worth knowing if you own more silver than gold.
Which occasions this saree suits
- Reception and sangeet: the silver brocade picks up artificial light better than it does daylight, which is what tissue is for
- Engagement and anniversary functions: formal without reading as traditional bridal
- Diwali and evening parties: the shimmer works hardest indoors
- Gifting: ivory with blue is a safer choice than a strong colour when you are not certain of someone's taste
How to style an ivory and blue tissue silk saree
Blouse
Royal blue, as photographed, picks up the border and is the safest choice — the two colours are already proven together on the saree. Ivory or silver keeps it tonal and very clean. Navy makes it more formal.
Keep the blouse solid. Embroidery on the body plus a broad brocade border is already a lot happening — a printed or heavily worked blouse is too much.
Jewellery
Silver, white gold and pearl all sit naturally with a silver zari saree, and pearl is the most flattering against ivory. Gold works if your blouse is warm, but it will fight the silver brocade slightly. Choose one metal and stay with it. One statement piece — over-accessorising a tissue saree is the most common mistake we see.
Footwear and finish
Two inch heels or more — tissue has body and hangs better with a little height. A clutch rather than a shoulder bag, which would sit on the embroidery. Hair tied or half-up.
Colour note
Ivory with a cool blue and silver is a quieter combination than most of our range. It flatters across complexions, and the blue near the face does the lifting that a plain ivory would not.
Size, length and drape
The saree is 6.5 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.
Tissue is stiffer than our soft silk. It holds its shape and gives a structured pleat, but it needs more pinning than a fluid fabric, at the shoulder especially. Around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder and pinned securely.
How to care for this saree
- Dry clean recommended for the first two or three wears — the first clean settles the fabric
- After that, hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
- Never machine wash tissue silk
- Do not wring, and never hang wet silk — it stretches and warps. Lay flat to dry in shade
- Wash separately — an ivory body against a royal blue border is the pairing most likely to show colour transfer
- The embroidery threads can snag. Keep rings, watch clasps and bag hardware clear of the body, and store it away from anything with a hook or a zip
- Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth with a silica gel sachet, not in a plastic bag
