Product Description
Product Description
This is a grey soft silk saree with a fine woven check through the body, a deep maroon contrast border, and a broad gold zari border carrying through to the pallu. The pallu is maroon with gold zari stripes and woven motifs. The grey is close to a soft silver, which is what keeps a heavy zari border from reading as too much.
What you are buying
- Fabric: soft silk — a semi-silk blend, not pure mulberry silk
- Colour: silver-grey body with a deep maroon border and pallu
- Weave: fine woven checks across the body
- Work: broad woven gold zari border, gold zari stripes and motifs on the pallu
- Length: 6.3 metres
About the fabric
Our soft silk is sourced from Varanasi, where the founder selects fabric directly from weaver families each season. The zari is woven into the fabric on the loom — it is not printed, glued or applied after weaving. That is what gives the border its texture and depth rather than a flat metallic surface.
Soft silk is a semi-silk blend. It is not pure mulberry silk, and we do not sell it as such. It carries the sheen and the drape of silk because it comes from the same weavers and the same looms, at a price that makes it a saree you will actually wear rather than store.
Which occasions this saree suits
- Weddings, as a guest: the grey-and-maroon combination is festive without competing with the bridal party
- Reception, sangeet and engagement functions: the broad zari border gives it enough presence for an evening
- Diwali and festive evenings: zari catches indoor and artificial light well
- Puja and family functions: traditional in structure, comfortable for a long day
- Navratri: grey and silver are among the nine Navratri colours — check the published colour list for the current year if you are following the day-by-day sequence
This is a dressed-up saree rather than an everyday one. The zari border is broad enough that it will read as overdressed at an office. For work wear, our Maheshwari cotton and printed crepe sarees are the better choice.
How to style a grey and maroon soft silk saree
Blouse
Maroon, as photographed, is the natural choice — picking up the border colour is the safest route with a neutral body. Deep wine, bottle green and antique gold all work. Black gives it a sharper line. A plain grey blouse matching the body will look flat; if you want tonal, go to a deeper charcoal instead.
Jewellery
Antique gold, temple gold or kundan sit naturally with the woven zari. Green stone or emerald-toned earrings pick up beautifully against maroon. One statement piece is enough — the border is already the loudest thing in the outfit.
Footwear and finish
Two to three inch block heels or wedges. A clutch or potli. Hair tied or in a low bun so the pallu and the border stay visible.
Colour note
A silver-grey body with a warm maroon border is one of the more versatile combinations in the range — the neutral base means it reads well across warm, wheatish, deep and fair complexions, and the maroon brings the warmth.
Size, length and drape
The saree is 5.5 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.
Soft silk has good pleat-holding ability because of its weight, which makes it straightforward to drape in the Nivi style — around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder and pinned.
How to care for this saree
- Dry clean recommended for the first two or three wears — the first clean settles the fabric
- After that, hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
