This is a dual-tone soft katan silk saree — a rose gold body running into a black pallu, with a broad antique gold zari brocade border carrying across both. The brocade is the most detailed in our katan range: rows of woven peacocks and paisley, framed by narrower zari bands, with small gold buttas scattered across the black.

About the fabric

Katan is a tighter, denser weave than our soft silk, which gives it more body and a crisper fall. The silk is sourced from Golghar market in Varanasi, where the founder selects fabric directly from weaver families each season.

The zari is woven into the fabric on the loom rather than printed, glued or applied afterwards. On a brocade this detailed it is obvious up close — the peacock motifs have raised texture and catch light unevenly, where a printed border would sit completely flat.

How a dual-tone saree drapes

Worth knowing before you buy: on a dual-tone saree, where the colour changes depends on how you pleat it. Drape it as photographed and the black sits low with rose gold across the shoulder. Take more fabric into the pleats and the black rises; take less and more rose gold shows at the front.

This is not a flaw — it means the saree can be worn two or three visibly different ways. But your drape will not look identical to ours, and we would rather say so here than have it surprise you.

How to style a rose gold and black katan silk saree

Blouse

Gold or antique gold brocade, as photographed, is the natural choice and picks up the border directly. Black makes it sharper and more modern. Deep wine and emerald green are the two contrasts worth considering.

Keep the blouse solid or simply woven. A brocade border this detailed against a busy blouse is too much happening at once — this is the one saree in the range where restraint matters most.

Jewellery

Pearl, as photographed, sits beautifully with rose gold and keeps the look contemporary. Antique gold and kundan take it more traditional. Rose gold jewellery is the one metal that genuinely matches the body of this saree, which is unusual. Pick one and stay with it.

Footwear and finish

Two to three inch heels. A clutch rather than a potli — this saree reads modern and a structured bag suits it. Hair tied or in a low bun so the pallu stays visible.

Colour note

Rose gold is a warm metallic and it sits close to the face on this drape, which lifts most complexions. The black grounds it and gives the saree the depth that a rose gold on its own would lack.

Size, length and drape

The saree is 6.5 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Katan is denser than our soft silk, so it holds a pleat crisply and keeps its shape through the evening. This border is broad and weighty — pin the pallu securely at the shoulder. Around 5 to 7 pleats at the front.

How to care for this saree

• Dry clean is strongly recommended for katan — the density of the weave and the width of the brocade border make it the safer route throughout the saree's life, not only for the first wear
• Never machine wash
• Do not wring, and never hang wet silk — it stretches and warps
• Two-tone fabric is worth keeping separate from other washing in any case — the pale half shows any colour transfer first
• Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth with a silica gel sachet, not in a plastic bag
