Product Description
This is a black Maheshwari saree with a deep red pallu and small gold zari buttas woven across both. A fine gold zari border runs the length of the saree and widens into a woven band where the black meets the red. It is a cotton-silk blend โ light enough to wear through a full working day, with enough contrast to carry an evening function.
What you are buying
- Fabric: Maheshwari silk cotton โ a cotton-silk blend, not pure cotton and not pure silk
- Colour: black body with a deep red pallu
-
Work: gold zari buttas across body and pallu, gold zari border with a woven band at the colour change
- Finish: tasselled pallu end
What is Maheshwari silk cotton?
Maheshwari is a weave from Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the Narmada. The weave is associated with Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, who set up the first weaving workshops there in the eighteenth century.
Maheshwari fabric is a blend of cotton and silk. This is not a shortcut or a substitute for a pure fabric โ it is what the weave has always been. The cotton is what makes it breathable and light on the shoulder; the silk is what gives the surface its quiet sheen and helps the drape fall cleanly instead of going limp. A Maheshwari saree in pure cotton would not behave like a Maheshwari saree.
Why black and red
Black is the most versatile colour we carry. It goes with any blouse, any jewellery and any footwear you already own, and it is the one saree in the range that does not need a decision made about it before you get dressed.
What the red pallu does is stop it reading as plain. Black on its own can look severe; a deep red running through the pallu and border turns it into something festive without losing the ease of a neutral.
Which occasions this saree suits
- Office and work wear: black is the most professional colour in the range, and the zari buttas are small enough not to read as overdressed
- Evening functions and party wear: the red pallu and gold zari give it enough presence for an evening event, and black photographs well under artificial light
- Family gatherings and daytime celebrations: festive without being loud
- Everyday wear: the easiest saree in the range to reach for when you have not planned an outfit
How to style a black and red Maheshwari saree
Blouse
Deep red, as photographed, picks up the pallu and is the safest choice โ the two colours are already proven together on the saree itself. Gold and antique gold pull out the zari. Ivory or cream lightens it for daytime. Bottle green, mustard and rani pink are all strong contrasts against black. This is the one saree in the range where almost any blouse colour works โ the only thing to avoid is plain black on black, which flattens it in photographs.
Jewellery
Gold and antique gold stand out most clearly against black. Oxidised silver gives it a more everyday reading. Pearl works if your blouse is ivory. One clear piece is enough with a contrast-pallu saree.
Footwear and finish
Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels. A simple bun or a braid. For office, minimal studs and flats.
Colour note
Black with a red pallu and gold zari carries its own contrast, which is what makes it wearable across the full range of complexions โ the red and gold sit near the face and do the lifting that a plain black saree would not.
Size, length and drape
The saree is 6.3 metres long, measuring the body, border and pallu together. It is free size โ the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.
Maheshwari holds a pleat well without being stiff, which makes it one of the easier fabrics to drape in the Nivi style โ around 5 to 7 pleats at the front, pallu over the left shoulder.
How to care for this saree
This saree has silk in it, so it is not a wash-and-forget cotton.
- Hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
- Do not machine wash
- Do not wring or twist
- Lay flat to dry in shade, never in direct sunlight โ sunlight fades colour on a saree like this more than washing does, and black shows fading as a dulling rather than a lightening
- Wash separately the first few times as a precaution โ a black and a deep red together are the two colours most likely to run
- Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth, not in a plastic bag
