About the print

Ajrakh is one of the oldest surviving print traditions in India, associated with Kutch in Gujarat and with Sindh across the border. Its signature is geometry — eight-pointed stars, trefoils and concentric medallions, built up in layers.

Traditional Ajrakh is printed on an indigo or madder ground. On black it behaves differently: the ivory and rose in the print jump forward, and the red reads deeper. It is a more dramatic version of the same design language.

The mirrors are real, not printed circles or foil, and they are placed into the pattern rather than scattered at random. Against black they are the most visible element on the saree — this reads quiet in flat light and comes alive the moment you move.

Which occasions this saree suits

• Sangeet and mehendi: mirror work belongs at the celebratory end of a wedding rather than the ceremonial one, and black makes it the more modern choice of the two

How to style a black Ajrakh mirror work saree

Blouse

Black, as photographed, is the safest and cleanest answer — it disappears behind the print and lets the mirrors carry the whole look.

Deep maroon or brick red picks the print up directly and makes the saree read warmer. Mustard is the bold option and works genuinely well against black and red. Ivory or off-white lightens it considerably and is worth considering for a daytime function.

Keep the blouse plain. An Ajrakh print with mirror work already carries geometry and sparkle, so a printed, embroidered or mirrored blouse is one thing too many. A plain blouse with a mirror-trimmed sleeve edge is as far as we would take it.

Jewellery

Oxidised silver first, and by some distance. Mirror work, Ajrakh and oxidised silver belong to the same design tradition, and together they look deliberate in a way that gold does not.

Chunky silver jhumkas, a broad silver choker, a hasli, or tribal-style pieces with beads or terracotta. Against a black ground, silver reads cleaner and brighter than it would on indigo, so this is the colourway where it works hardest.

Antique gold is the warmer alternative if you prefer it. Avoid polished yellow gold and avoid anything with stones — the mirrors are already doing that job, and two sparkles compete. One statement piece is plenty.

Footwear and finish

Juttis, kolhapuris or block heels rather than stilettos. A potli bag, mirror-worked or embroidered if you have one. Hair in a loose bun or a braid.

Size and drape

The saree is 6.5 metres long. It is free size — the drape adjusts for heights of roughly 5'0" to 5'10". If you are on the shorter side, tuck the plain end slightly inward before you begin.

Gaji silk is fluid rather than stiff, so it pleats easily and falls softly. The extra length leaves room for a fuller set of pleats or a longer pallu if you prefer to drape it that way.
